Session 1: Was That Thunder?

We are past the half way point in the first session. It is a relatively small session, only around 60 campers, so it feels like a nice slow start to the summer. Almost like the calm before the storm.

Speaking of storms, the weather here has been ridiculous. Sunday evening the storm hit just when we were in the middle of the safety talks. I was giving a talk while watching dark, ominous clouds get closer and closer over the staff members' heads. It was the fastest I have ever given that talk, and the staff started running as soon as the storm broke.

It was also during that time the trampoline came unmoored from its place out in the lake, and we helplessly watched it float towards the shore as the sky rumbled above us. We were given directions to attempt to tie it to a tree without going in the water, so when it got close enough to the shore, we ran in the pouring rain. I had one foot on shore and one in the water to tie it up, praying in my head that the lightening would strike anywhere else but the lake.

It is still raining, and today it is absurdly cold. The steam coming off the lake is billowing across the waterfront. If you could pray for some sunshine and heat that would be marvellous!

This week I'm thanking God for all the wonderful people he has placed in my life, and especially at camp. I'm also thanking him for bringing me back to a place that I love. I find myself remembering how I would calm myself down last semester, if I was nervous or afraid, I would think of camp and my daily walk from the Waterfront to the dining hall. And now I am here, as I make that walk, I can't help but smile.
